Georgia Mountains YMCA reaches out to military families
By Ashley Cox Staff
GAINESVILLE - The Georgia Mountains YMCA is participating in a special program designed to promote health and wellness among members of the military and their families.
As part of the YMCA of the USA's "Outreach Initiative," the YMCA is offering free memberships to members of the military and to their families.
The initiative provides $31 million in government funding for families of active armed forces to receive memberships at full facility YMCAs in their communities.
"It's designed to promote healthy minds, bodies and spirits for the entire family, and during a time when the parent...is away from their family," said Dave Holmes, vice president of human services for the Georgia Mountains YMCA.
Holmes said families need to have an opportunity to recreate together, but in today's financial situation many of them aren't able to do so.
"This will provide them that opportunity and it's our way here at the Georgia Mountains YMCA to provide that service and support our military families," he said.
The announcement of the initiative was made to the YMCA staff on Sept. 26.
"I am proud and honored to extend to families of active armed services personnel these services, programs and efforts of our staff during these challenging times for our nation," said Mike Brown, CEO of the Georgia Mountains YMCA.
"We are fully committed to providing these services and support to the families of those protecting our nation and way of life."
